Now Home

Now I'm lying on my bed for the last night at home before leaving to SH. Here now, this house, is more like home than ever solely because of His grace. I still remember vaguely last year this time this house was still filled with mistrust, disbelief, unremitted quarrels and complaints. Sometimes in a state of desperation I am, sometimes self-reproaching...And clearly I remembered my pleading prayer to Him to save me out of this and salvation comes to this house.

Now here I am again. Family worship was started for the first time in this house.I lead, WE sing. It started with one listener and once hit 4 at the highest which means all the members in this house had joined. It started in the 1st Sunday I came and kept its form even in the very 1st day of the lunar new year and till the last.

The night before the first Sunday I preached (I still would like to call it preach though it's the miniest in terms of scale), I was filled with nervousness and worries, for fear that my request to worship at home would be declined and my message would not be well-communicated. But it was so readily approved by the "royal hostess of the house"——“Ok, but please be quick, I can;t afford too much time.”I tried to set the Royal Lady down with my playing guitar. The music soothed us both. "一切歌颂赞美","云上太阳","恩友歌","主赐给我的恩典"....Praise the Lord for this wonderful time. Though she did not sing but she enjoyed listening. Then after a brief prayer, I started teaching the message. As soon as I spoke out, the Lord helped me with it. Hardly could I imagine that I would become so bold to speak out the truth of eternity. But I know it's not me but Him that did it. Yes, I am just the very vessel.

My heart was softened generally by His love and I find my strength in loving the families that love me so much, and also in keeping to pray for their health and salvation for all.Praise God for the service I could hold in my Grandma's, the first-time-ever I spoke this truth to them. Thank Lord for the wonderful moment that my grandma of mother's side prayed the prayer of inviting Him into her heart.

One whole month staying at home has eventually become a pleasure and enjoyment—— being served by the ones that love me so much and serving them by ministering their hearts. It starts with unwilling reluctant ritual by lulling but ends with natural habit to make up the time to worship. Believe in Him and you and all your household will be saved. These words have never be so true to me as now.

They are now the sheep I nurture in the sense of spirit, I told myself and Him with joy and excitement. This is my start of the mission, the long journey I have embarked on.

Thank you, Lord.

Thanks for the translation project, I found the book Ben-Hur by Lew Wallace, a great book written by a man of true faith. The same as Ben-Hur, changed and renewed are also me and my households, one and after another, they will be know Him fully.

Yes, Thank you for loving me so much. My heart will sing no other name but yours
——Jesus, Jesus......

Now A New Star..t..!?!

Thanks to the new tech so finally I'm able to come back to Blogger. Thanks to Mr.X, who inspired me to set my mind to deal with this area that I know nothing about. Though it took me quite a while to figure it out and also I messed up the host by trusting some posts, I still made it to log in. Sometimes I'm quite proud of myself to be such a good learner and I'm trusting myself on my ability to get to know something if I'm well instructed. That can be an advantage in working and coping with things, but can be a fatal defect in dealing with relationship...Now you know who I refer to... Just a few days ago, I had a row with him over that business contract thing. I despised him for his inability to learn and to do any little things and he roared at me for my ill manner and "unreasonable demands." Finally he reconciled by trying but still not making any improvement and I reconciled by apologizing and doing all the work left. This is it. I realized that's what I'm gonna live with! If someone is not made to do something which means he has no gift in doing that, then I am the only one to make up for it, to weep, to struggle, to toil...——IF I DO NOT ALLOW GOD'S INTERFERENCE IN ALL THESE. Yes, we are too different to be together, as two individuals, as two selfish, proud individuals. That's why we need the Lord. So it's quite a blessing to have some time to weigh and think before moving to the next step. "Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him."...Thank you Lord. I hope I can wait and grow in love and patience.

Miss Another Home...

It quite bothers me the log in problem since i came back from the States. The systems, the people and what the society is seeking... It seems the culture shock lasts far longer than the time I flew away from home. Miss the parents there even more~ I saw their faces in dreams....

I've promised myself to have that unforgettable and also unbeliebally miraculous experience written down into a book and have it as a testimony...but till now, nothing put down till my memory and thankfulness gradually fade away..

It should not be like that...
Several days I ago, to make a speech in the orentation of winter trimester, I went over the pictures and videoes I've taken during the past year...I miss them all...Chaemi, Seungwon, Yina, Hongmin,Kyong & Bobby, Timmy& Cherry...none of them less...
Though I am enjoying the unlimited tender care and love from my husband-to-be...

Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be afraid, for I am your God. This is the verse given to me by Kyong before I left...Yes, I should be cheerful and offer thankfulness all the time for Him who has offered me all these grace and experience...I love God and I should ask and complaint about nothing from now on...

The Awakening---speech contest script

Spring, it is the best time of the year. It is a season of sunshine and flowers and joy. After the longest winter I’ve ever had of my life, I finally see a tint of verdure popping out the ground. All the life here is enjoying the spring awakening. Time flies. It's time again to say goodbye.

Clearly I remember 9 months ago when I first stepped on this land, I stood in the crowd in the Minneapolis airport, excited to have breathed the first breath of fresh air of this country. “Welcome to Heaven.” I got the message from my friend. The scene had already been played in my dreams time and time again and the excitement overwhelmed all the fear. Here I am, America, a country that bears the name of freedom, advance and power.

Also I remember 8 months ago, for the first time I heard the serious argument about politics over the radio hot-line program. For the first time, I saw the Christian fellowship be part of the school activity so explicitly; for the first time I joined a church with over 100 people and for the first time I experienced a retreat of thousands of people shouting Jesus and Hallelujah. This is a country not afraid of speaking about politics, parties and God.

Then 4 months ago, standing in the crossroad of Time square, New York, I watched people passing by, with or without facial expression, some with the shining mink coat and some with dirty cloth that narrowly covered their body. I was shocked by my familiarity to this scene, as if I was standing on the street of Shanghai. Suddenly I was awakened from my dream: America is not heaven. I started to wonder: among them how many knows where they are from and where they are going? How many still hold a rest place of their spirit and soul? How many of them value the words carved on the money more than the money? And how many still have the courage and confidence declaring that “in God we trust” as they did hundreds years ago when this nation of power was established?

I was fully awakened from my dream: America is not heaven and no country on this earth can be heaven. As a result, between here and the place I come from there seems no difference to be excited about.

Just several hours ago, I rested my body on the sofa of the Williams Library with books on my lap. The sun comes out after a brief drizzle. The sky was dyed by the Great Creator. I know that’s the very thing I will definitely miss when I go back.

However, when I found myself more than reconciled to this placidity, I asked myself: If you can enjoy these beautiful painting everyday, are you still be touched by heart every time, standing in awe of the greatness of the creator? If you can see the Milky Way everyday, are you still moved to tears and gain more awe and gratefulness of the wonder and beauty of God? And you see recent catastrophe stoke again and again in other parts of the world, are you still be able to kneel down to pray for God’s mercy though it seem so far away from this peaceful place. If one of the answers to these questions could be no, I would rather go back and stay away from this beautiful home for me, in case the evil part of me turns a blind eye to all the things God has done. I’d rather be awakening, for it’s already spring.

On Memorial Religious Seeing in Judaism

On Memorial Religious Seeing in Judaism

Idolatry, as discussed in the article, is either “an improper form of worship” or “the improper god being worshiped”. Icon is a medium bridging the past and the present while idol is the object for worship.  [1](Plate, 240) In that sense, I can see the three memorials not as memory itself but as medium that remind people of the past memories, though they are somewhat somehow created intentionally to resemble the real objects of the past---like the poet carved on the railcar, the special smell of oil, which might mislead people to believe them to be the real “idol” thus generating the practice of worship.

For the three memorials, these artworks express certain personal or cultural values of artists but whether the interpretation is religious or not can be determined by the viewers through their personal values and whether they see them as icons to reminisce or idols to worship. Thus to make some religious, for one thing, the displayed should be the real object and for another, the viewers t should take it as generator for worship---the religious practice. For example, the three memorials invoke the heavy memory of the past and the call for peace and love from the Judaism. However, if the viewers take the displayed railcar as the real ones used during war time, acknowledge all they see to be part of the history and stand in awe at them---which could be the practice of worship, then the “seeing” becomes religious seeing and the act becomes idolatry.

To answer the last question, art, as I see it, is something of aesthetic and various cultural values which could embody religious value. In Judaism, to worship, or rather say---to be in awe of anything else more than God can be idolatry. That could be part of the contradiction brought by those art forms related to Judaism.

On Eusebius' Church History

What makes this book interesting most for me is the identity of the author of this book. As a historian as well as a Christian---not only a Christian but also an important one), the role he was playing is interestingly shown in his history book. He is recording the history while being part of the history; he is studying the group while being one member of the group; he was praying for the power of God to assist in writing the history work of God. His illustration reads very attractive.

Besides,  it becomes even more interesting to read the comment of the later historians' comments on the old while reading the old. Now spirit moving and brain working, we, as the latest or newest at this time this moment, come up with the latest thoughts and ideas. It's just interesting to compare these three.

On the value of Hinduism

I agree with what Rebekah has said---Hindu art focus on pleasing their gods. As they believe the actual presence of gods/goddesses, every time the appearance of a certain god, though of artistic form, is sacred as a real presence and because of the frequent presence of gods, the sacred worship becomes part of their daily life. Thus I think the value of Hinduism lies in the truthfulness. Beside, this kind of value is expressed by seeing. They values the truthfulness of seeing---which is related to Dashan.

On the film Baraka

There was a plethora of images, locations, and religions presented throughout. My questions are: What was the film about? What is the message? Why was there no talking? What does the film say about religion? What does it convey concerning value in religion?

The film is a documentary without story and even talks, but it is also one with abundant stories that can hardly be described by words. These are stories of the present and also the past. These are the common and the difference of the ancient and the modern. These are question marks of development or recession of the human species.

About the theme,I'd rather conclude it as Time. They find something in common in the less developed area and developed areas and connected the scenes---like the repetition work in beating drums and raising chickens.

About religion, I think the director is also finding the way to show some common practice of worship shared by different religions and also their similar ultimate goal----to find out how and why to live and to die.

I believe the director wants to show us just pictures and music and encourages us to find the anwer of our own. To avoid the intervene of the external guidance might be another reason that the film has no words in it.

On the Apocrypha---The Gospel of Mary

Q: What is your evaluation of this book? Is it a book to die for? Does it seem to you useful and/or interesting? Or is it a book you wouldn't mind seeing burned by government officials? Why?

BG: RETRIEVED FROM http://www.gnosis.org/library/GMary-King-Intro.html

From the Introduction to:

The Gospel of Mary of Magdala:
Jesus and the First Woman Apostle

by Karen L. Kin

Yet these scant pages provide an intriguing glimpse into a kind of Christianity lost for almost fifteen hundred years. This astonishingly brief narrative presents a radical interpretation of Jesus' teachings as a path to inner spiritual knowledge; it rejects his suffering and death as the path to eternal life; it exposes the erroneous view that Mary of Magdala was a prostitute for what it is-a piece of theological fiction; it presents the most straightforward and convincing argument in any early Christian writing for the legitimacy of women's leadership; it offers a sharp critique of illegitimate power and a utopian vision of spiritual perfection; it challenges our rather romantic views about the harmony and unanimity of the first Christians; and it asks us to rethink the basis for church authority. All written in the name of a woman.

The Gospel of Mary was written when Christianity, still in its nascent stages, was made up of communities widely dispersed around the Eastern Mediterranean, communities which were often relatively isolated from one other and probably each small enough to meet in someone's home without attracting too much notice.

Comment:

The first several chapters---the words the Savior said---sound to me like a collection from the other gospels. Several examples of comparison with other gospels as listed.
1)Mary4:29 He who has a mind to understand, let him understand.32,he who has ears to hear, let him hear
Matthew 11:15 He who has ears, let him hear.
Mark4:9 Then Jesus said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
2)Mary 5:9 Blessed are you that you did not waver at the sight of Me. For where the mind is there is the treasure.
Matthew6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Luke12:34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
3) Mary 4:34 Beware that no one lead you astray saying Lo here or lo there! For the Son of Man is within you.
Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.(KJV)
4)Mary 4: 36 Those who seek Him will find Him.
Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Luke 11:9 So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Those listed above can all be found in the canons which is part of Jesus' teaching of different times. Thus it just feels so strange that at the end of the chapter 4, it writes "When He said this He departed." It seems it all came from preaching at one time.

Second, chapter 8 is the most interesting of all, the dialogue among desires, soul and ignorance, and the visions of the different powers of wrath like the seven sins. This is really beyond my poor understanding. Especially what the soul said in Mary 8:21: "What binds me has been slain, and what turns me about has been overcome," Does it mean the struggle of soul to get rid of the bind of body and be submissive to the spirit? Anyway, it's a little bit theatrical.

Third, the last argument in chapter9. It is not in accordance with that age, like an intentional writing arguing for women's rights, the modern verion story based on the ancient teaching.

I don't think this book worth one's life to protect it, at least we've the four gospels there.

On Tertullan's Apology

http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0301.htm

The words from this apology is quite different than the other two I've read. It sounds more harsh and direct without any cover or better to say, fear.

For example, in chapter 1, "if in this case alone you are afraid or ashamed to exercise your authority in making public inquiry with the carefulness which becomes justice." It's more of a bold criticism.

Tertullan stated clearly their position and the gods of the pagans including the emperor's "no existence"as in Chapter 27. "Enough has been said in these remarks to confute the charge of treason against your religion: for we cannot be held to do harm to that which has no existence. When we are called therefore to sacrifice, we resolutely refuse, relying on the knowledge we possess, by which we are well assured of the real objects to whom these services are offered, under profaning of images and the deification of human names." It might looks like a serious humiliation for one who is empowered with all.

The chapter 50 is even more clear and sincere. "No one indeed suffers willingly, since suffering necessarily implies fear and danger." He stated boldly. I believe readers can read the sincerity and honesty of the author, and can read his character through the paper---maybe the embodiment of Christians' character, too.

For a wise emperor, this apology is sincere advise that he might think twice; a stupid one, a thread that would irritate him. I think I would like to be a wise one...but i am not sure how I would react if I was really put into that situation because I remember how I laughed at Christian God years ago. At least, to challenge something somebody firmly believes in is very difficult as well as dangerous, unless the Spirit of God works on the stubborn human hearts.

On Athenagoras' "Plea for the Christians"

http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0205.htm

The letter is started as voice from activists arguing for equal rights, with strong emotion---which is fit for the title "plea".

In chapter one, the author firstly gave examples of people sacrificing and worshiping their gods in different places and explained the necessity to have some gods to worship. Then he argued for the equal right of Christians to worship their God too.

"On the one hand, that to believe in no god at all is impious and wicked, and on the other, that it is necessary for each man to worship the gods he prefers, in order that through fear of the deity, men may be kept from wrong-doing. But why— for do not, like the multitude, be led astray by hearsay— why is a mere name odious to you? Names are not deserving of hatred: it is the unjust act that calls for penalty and punishment. "

When reading these part, I feel it is like a well-orginized persuasion speech which arouse people's sympathy, as he stated that "the whole empire, under your intelligent sway, enjoys profound peace. But for us who are called Christians you have not in like manner cared; but although we commit no wrong...." He euphemistically condemmed the unjustness by  praising the peaceful and intelligent governing. This it something that may works.

On Justin Martyr First Apology

http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0126.htm

Reading the Apology is not that easy, especially in terms of the language; but I still find it interesting.

This great martyr, as a great philosopher, tried to explain Christian faith  with the worldly knowledge in a logic way.

What I find extremely helpful is Chapter 20 "Heathen analogies to Christian doctrine". Justin, with his comprehensive knowledge, compared Christianity with other poets and philosophies people honored like the Stoic, Plato and yielded the conclusion that "If, therefore, on some points we teach the same things as the poets and philosophers whom you honour, and on other points are fuller and more divine in our teaching, and if we alone afford proof of what we assert, why are we unjustly hated more than all others?"

This kind of compare and contrast is commonly seen in other chapters too. In the chapter to follow, "Analogies to the history of Christ", Justin argued from the perspective of history other than philosophy. He compared Jesus Christ with the Roman gods---Jupiter,  Æsculapius, Bacchus, Ariadne.... and argued for which one is more "holy and virtue". The sharp contrast is very convincing to people who would like to listen to his argument. Also in chapter 44 "Not nullified by prophecy", Justin compared Plato's teaching with that of Moses to explain.

Eusebius Book X

Eusebius' final pages are among the most optimistic in all of historical literature. Why is Eusebius so positive and so hopeful about the future? In particular, why is he so positive about Constantine? What is Constantine doing that makes Eusebius feel that the Roman world is exactly on the right track? Do you feel Eusebius is missing anything here?

Eusebius himself didn't live in an age of peace. After years witness of the torture and horror, it's reasonable for him to rejoice seeing somebody put an end to all these sufferings and thus the identity as a Christian would be eventurally affirmed. There are plenty good reasons for him to hope for the future.

Constantine firstly abandoned the practice of persecuting Christians, which assure the Christians of the "flawless ceremonies"(Book 10:3) and also show them grace from God. The emperors "further confirmed God's blessings to us through a succession of decree in favor of the Christians".(Book 10:2) Secondly, he offered physical support for Christians. "Bishops received many personal letters, honors, and gifts of money from the emperor."(Book 10:2) The execution of Edict of Milan has ensured Christians' rights and has marked the turning point of Christianity in Roman history. All these make Eusebius feel that Roman world is on the right track.

However, just reading the last book of Eusebius's, it makes me feel that the history book has fallen out of its genre---prayers and hymns fill up this book and even one addressing a single bishop.  As the comment reads, "what follows is not history but panegyric, a literary form no longer used, though it was popular in the ancient world at this time."(Book 10:3) It's actually really subjective as a history book although it reads interesting and I can still feel his passion.
However Eusebius seems too positive that he missed something important ----the identity of Constantine and the stability and prosperity of the nation. Personally I am not sure a man with such a power can be as spiritual as Eusebius has describe, but as least it's kind of overtuned. This emperor is fulled described as a man of God in Eusebius's context. The address of Constantine in his book reveals Eusebius' biased attitude towards this historical figure. Book 10:8 "all gracious emperor that he was." "God became Constantine's friend, Protector and Guardian"; Constantine---"the godly objects", the mighty victor (Book10:9) Maier ends up this book with an interesting comment on that, which can explain Eusebius' writing to a certain extent.

On Persecution of early Christians

After reading these two book, I think about the metaphor of the frog put into water----The frog in the lukewarm water is easier to die than the one thrown into hot water. The one thrown into hot water will jump out at once. This metaphor may be not that proper but at least has some connection.

The maytyrdom of Chrisitans and the reaction of crowds depicted by Eusebius has shown some of the reasons of Christians' perseverance in face of persecution.

For example, Book4: 14 (P147) At his glorious death, the whole crowd was so amazed at the bravery of the God-loving martyr and at the courage of Christians in general...

Christians under persecutions are in face of severe situation where their faith will burst out into power or be burnt to ashes. Like Peter mentioned:

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.(1 Peter 1:5-6)
But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.(1 Peter 2:20)

The Christian maytrys are the ones  to be praised and are assured of the favor of God. Is there any great blessing than the favor of God? So, the persecution is a test. Like Jesus who died for our sins on cross, we, the persecuted, are just being put to test in front of God and are just "participating in Lord's suffering" now.  May the will of God be fulfilled. This is what they want to say, I think.

My day, My week, My Year

How many days, how many weeks are there in my year here in the States, I didn't count.

"It is a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done; it is a far, far better way that I go to than I have ever known."

This is the longest winter I've ever had in my life - from last November till March. This is also the longest spring I've I'd in my life - from last August I stepped on this amazing land till now while I am standing here.

The sun comes out after a brief drizzle. Birds whistles joyfully which announce the late coming of spring in Aberdeen. Every morning is a blessing and every season is spring.

The sunshine is warm, the same now as a year ago when I first came with two suitcases from that faraway land.

During my winter trip to Florida,
He asked me: what
"I don't know." "Then what is ""I'm sorry I really don't know."

I didn't see so many stars at a time. That's not because stars do not exist but it's just simply covered.
What can you bring to that school as an ambassador of China? What can you bring back?
I still remember the question raised by the interviewer and the answer might have determined whether I was able to come to Northern or not.

It's awe-inspiring.

I am not here next year when you think of me if u will ever think of me. So

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.

I have in mind the poem by Christina Rosette.

Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you planned:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad

And it will never be too late to counsel and pray. For I take my God with me and I leave my God to thee.

4/11/2011

Something I want to write by that time but stays incomplete, just leave it there, with time:

I will forget how I met with this and that ....
but I will remember how my pastor sacrificed her own to love us
I will forget how .......not now, but at least someday.
That year the war of ....broke out ...
But I will remember how
